UK Border Force visit

Posted on 17th December, 2019

Friday 25th October 2019

North Sunderland Harbour was visited by the UK Border Force Patrol vessel 'NIMROD'.

The CPV has a 280 mile range at 20 knots and can travel at speeds of up to 32 knots. The deployment of CPVs has already led to successful operations to track and intercept those involved in criminal activity.

For example, in May, a Border Force CPV intercepted a suspicious vessel approaching Hayling Island in Cornwall. The detection led to the arrest of six individuals on suspicion of attempting to enter the UK illegally. A further two individuals were arrested and charged with attempting to facilitate illegal entry into the UK. The vessels also participate in operations tackling irregular migration and drugs.

As well as carrying out regular patrols of UK waters, CPVs will act on intelligence provided by law enforcement and international partners. Additionally they will be engaged with Project Kraken which encourages the public, harbour masters and others working around the coastline of Britain to report suspicious activity on the coastline and at smaller ports.

They are just one part of the Border Force approach to security which uses a combination of state of the art detection technology, international partnership work and intelligence-based operational activity to prevent illegal activity at the border.

Main Pier works update

Posted on 17th December, 2019

4th Dec 19

If you've been down the harbour in the past week, or indeed just checked out our cameras, you'll notice just how big the main pier looks; now that Balfour Beattie and their teams have begun to pack up.

The £3 million renovation project has been a challenging task, with environmental factors causing some delays, but the bulk of the work is now completed and only a few loose ends are left to tidy up.

Overall, despite the obvious disruption a job of this size can cause, the project has been handled sensitively and expertly by all involved, and on behalf of the Harbour Commissioners, staff and users, we wish all of the contractors all the best over the festive season an beyond.

Santa's special delivery

Posted on 17th December, 2019

There's something fishy about this Santa and his helpers...

You could be forgiven for thinking that Santa Claus had arrived early at North Sunderland Harbour on Tuesday; but it was actually a visit from Dave Linkie of the Fishing News to the skipper of 'Standsure' that convinced our Commissioner's chairman to get in the festive spirit; and suit up.  The skipper of the 'JJ', Glen Annison along with both crews (and the harbourmaster) thought Christmas actually had come early watching Jonathan Dawson get dressed!
